The meeting was part of the AADA (American Academy of Dermatology Association) Legislative Conference held September 10–12, 2017. During this annual event, dermatologists from across the nation receive advocacy training and then meet with members of Congress on Capitol Hill.
“On Tuesday, I joined the AADA Legislative Conference on Capitol Hill to advocate for patients with skin disease,” said Dr. Evans. “Our specific mission was to educate legislators about the burden of skin disease, fight for physicians’ right to use compounded medications for patients and repeal the IPAB, an advisory board that has the potential to cut off seniors’ access to Medicare.”
Dr. Evans — a native Texan who has a particular interest in treating skin cancer and psoriasis — joined other board-certified dermatologists from his home state to meet with Senator Cruz. During the meeting, they addressed issues concerning the future of dermatological care and answered the senator’s questions about medical and dermatological issues.
The AADA has found that face-to-face meetings with lawmakers are the most effective way to advocate for change and help shape public policy. Advocacy training by policy experts prepares the dermatologists to discuss the pressing issues facing their specialty.
